Who we are
“We desire for you to come as you are and have an authentic experience of Jesus in all His love, wonder and beauty.
We believe that church should be more like a lifeboat than a pleasure cruise.
Church should be a place that welcomes all people. Church should help see people healed and set free to become who God has created them to be.
We have learned over the years that this a powerful, exciting and, at times, messy journey. That is why we emphasize the grace, mercy and love the Father has for us, and that we should have for each other.
We would love for you be our guest this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. If you have any questions, please contact us and we’ll be happy to get back to you!”
What we believe
With other Christians throughout the ages, we proclaim classic Christian beliefs as expressed by the Apostles’ Creed. At The South Renou UMC, we believe we must emphasize what is most important, and not divide over minor points. More specifically, you will find our teaching is based on the following core beliefs:
What we believe
- About God: God exists eternally as one God in three persons: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (This understanding has historically been described as the Trinity.) God is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe.
- About Jesus: Jesus is the Son of God, the second person of the Trinity. He was born to the Virgin Mary by miraculous conception. Being both fully God and fully human, He lived a sinless life, perfectly revealing the Father. By His suffering, death and resurrection, he provided the only way to salvation. He rose from the dead after three days, and ascended to heaven where He rules and reigns with the Father. He will return again to earth and rule as the supreme Judge and King of all.
- About the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, not a mere force. His inner prompting makes people aware of their need for Jesus. He is given to every believer at the moment of salvation to empower them to live a holy life and to grant gifts for service. He leads all believers into truth, and believers become like Christ as a result of submitting to His leading. All gifts of the Spirit listed in the New Testament are available to believers today.
- About Humanity: Men and women are created by God in His image, and all are loved by God. We are made to know God personally and to glorify Him in our lives. However, in addition to the wonderful promise and potential, each of us also has an inner attitude of rebellion against God’s leadership in our lives. That is called sin. Sin separates us from God. No one has lived a sinless life (except Jesus), and therefore, all of us need God’s forgiveness and salvation through Christ.
- About Salvation: Salvation is a gift of God which we receive through faith in Christ – it is not earned or deserved. We are able to experience the assurance of our salvation because of God’s promise.
- About the Bible: The Bible is God’s word to each of us. It was written by human authors under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The scriptures are the full and final authority on all matters of faith and practice.
Denominational Connection
South Reno UMC is rooted in the Wesleyan theological tradition and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. We seek to make disciples of Jesus Christ who worship passionately, love extravagantly, and witness boldly.
Where we come from
Rather than being a place where people are met with shame, guilt, and condemnation, Jesus leads us to be a family that extends His grace, mercy, and forgiveness to everyone. No matter what you’ve been through or what questions you might have, we want you to be a part of the family.
There are people attending, and even leading South Reno, who have major hurts, habits, and hang-ups. In fact, perfect people are not allowed. We’re a community of people who don’t have it all together but are discovering what it means to find life in Jesus, to follow him fully, to break free from our past, and to walk in victory together. That’s who we are.
South Reno United Methodist Church was officially chartered in 1989, but we were a church long before that. Our mission, with every Christian on earth, is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
We believe discipleship is central to Christianity. We also believe that discipleship is something that we do together. (That is why we are all about relationships.)
We believe that everyone can learn to do what Jesus did on earth, and should take responsibility for growing to do so. We aim at all times to model Jesus’ approach to his followers which was low control, high accountability.
Three simple questions are integral in this process:
- What is God saying to you?
- What are you going to do about it?
- Who are you going to tell?
What on earth does that mean? South Reno is not a warehouse to store perfect people. We are a life giving church that is all about relationships. Come and experience who we are and the life-transforming power of God’s love. See you Sunday!
